Small Business – The Backbone of our Economy

September 23, 2015

ESQUIMALT – October is Small Business Month in BC and, in fact, across the country. It’s a month dedicated to honoring entrepreneurs, and celebrating small businesses for all that they do. We at the Esquimalt Chamber know that small business is the backbone of our economy and a driving force toward creating a livable community.

That’s why we are working with the Mayor and Council to facilitate a business forum that will bring together business owners, community leaders, politicians and Township staff to help the Township accomplish the number one priority identified in its Economic Development Strategy (EDS). Namely, how to Ensure municipal planning, bylaws and policies support a vibrant local business sector”. The Chamber will devote its efforts during Small Business Month toward constructively working with Council, staff and our members on the planning for the business forum. Talks have already begun so stay tuned for details.

In the meantime, did you know that Esquimalt is home to some small businesses that are having a large impact across our province and around the world? As part of this month’s salute to small business, we thought we would highlight some of these amazing people and businesses.

Steve Batchelor manages Michael Mason Co. Ltd, which since 1967 has been producing licence plate frames, vinyl owner’s manual covers, key fobs and other items for auto dealers across BC.

James Herrington began AGO Environmental in 1986 and manufactures specialized support equipment for the mining, military, oceanographic, and scientific communities around the world.

Helen Edley recently opened Sharkzcoins, Canada’s first brick and mortar geocaching store. They also produce military coins, plaques, commemorative medallions and geocaching geocoins.

Serving those closer to home is Esquimalt’s newest eatery, Restaurante La Tortilla Mexicana. Go see Ricardo and family for some of the most authentic Mexican food north of the 49th.

As part of Small Business Month, we encourage you to patronize the locally owned businesses in Esquimalt and while you’re there say hello to the men and women who, through their hard work and determination have brought these businesses to life.

Finally, we would like to thank Chamber Director, Stephanie Ritchie of Cooper Financial Group, for her tireless efforts in putting together last month’s Arts and Antiques Appraisal. Those attending the inaugural event at the English Inn had a great time while learning about their treasured collectables.
